Website or business app: how to choose

They look similar on the surface but serve different goals. A simple criterion settles the question before you spend a euro.

A showcase website presents your business and convinces a visitor to get in touch. A business application does the work for you: it books appointments, issues invoices, tracks cases. They are not the same projects, nor the same budgets.

The deciding criterion is simple: who will use the tool? If the main audience is a customer looking for information, it is a website. If the daily users are your team or logged-in clients who need to get something done, it is an application.

Many projects start as a website and discover along the way that a tool is missing: online booking, for instance. The right sequence is to plan for it from the start: a website designed to host an app module avoids a full rebuild two years later.

Conversely, we meet freelancers who want “an application” when a clear page with a form would do. An application costs money to build, but also to maintain and to learn. Without daily users, it will not pay for itself.

Our rule of thumb: if you hesitate, start with the website — it pays back quickly — and get the app priced separately, with specific users and a quantified time saving on the other side. The worst scenario is an oversized application nobody uses.
